LED Tube Lights

LED tube lights are more and more popular nowadays. They are widely used for both commercial lighting and residential lighting applications. You can use a LED tube light to replace your existing fluorescent lamps as a retrofit installation, or can also install it directly in your new building.

More About LED Tube Lights

Types of LED Tube Lights

Type A: These LED tubes are designed to be compatible with fluorescent ballasts. The installation is “Plug and Play” and simply replaces the original fluorescent tube with an LED equivalent, requiring the use of the original ballast. This is the easiest solution to replace your fixture if you have already determined your ballast is functioning properly.

Type B: Also known as direct wire tubes or ballast bypass tubes, they are powered directly from the main electrical system in the building. Type B LED tubes can further be categorized as single-ended or double-ended.

In a single-ended configuration, only the two pins on one end of the tube are used (one pin = live; one pin = neutral), and the two pins on the other end are not electrically functional, only used for holding the lamp in place.

In a double-ended configuration, the two pins on each side of the tube are the same polarity. Therefore, the lamp holders on one end of the tube must be connected to the neutral wire, while the other must be connected to the live wire.

Types of LED Tubes

Type A+B: Also known as hybrid LED tubes, type A + B LED tubes are the most versatile LED Tubes on the market currently. They work both with ballast compatible as type A, and direct power as type B. You don’t need to worry if it will work with the ballast because if it does not, you can simply bypass the ballast and still use the tube.

Type C: These tubes do not have the LED driver integrated into the LED tube, and therefore require a separate LED driver device to be connected between the LED tube and mains electricity. They offer the most flexibility and efficiency for a lighting system and can be equipped with dimming functions, control functions, and reduced maintenance over the life of the system.

Base type of LED Tubes

There are different bases for LED tube lights according to different applications.
G5 is mainly for T5 LED tubes. G13 are commonly used on T8 or T12 LED tube. While FA8 and R17D are usually used for an 8ft T8 LED tube.

LED Tube Lights Base Types

Types by Dimensions

There are a variety of shapes, lengths, and diameters in tube lights in order to suit a wide range of applications.

T5 LED Tube Lights: A T5 tube light measures 5/8 of an inch in diameter, with the most common models measuring 4 feet long.

T8 LED Tube Lights: Typically found for general lighting applications in offices and warehouses, T8 tube lights are the most common type of tube light available. They have a 1-inch diameter and are commonly 4 feet long, but they can also range from 1 to 8 feet in length.

T12 LED Tube Lights: A T12 tube light has a similar variety of lengths as a T8, but has a larger diameter of 1 and 1/2 inches.

The “T” stands for tubular, referring to the tube’s shape, and the number following it represents the bulb diameter in eighths of an inch. T8 and T12 fixtures are generally the same length and use the same pins(G13), so mechanically they are usually cross-compatible.

Advantages of LED Tube Lights vs. Fluorescent:

No Harmful UV Rays: Unlike fluorescent bulbs, LED lighting doesn’t produce UV light. Its light emissions fall in the visible light range, making it easier on the eyes and resulting in fewer headaches for workers and others who use this lighting. UV light can also cause a fabric’s color to fade, another reason to choose LED tubes for residential spaces.

Environmentally friendly: LED lighting is also no Mercury and IR radiation, EMI free, completely green, and environmentally friendly.

Better performance: LED tube light is an instant start, the light is gentle, has no shadow and no flickering, is eye-protective, and enhances the quality of the lighting atmosphere over fluorescent.

Superior Energy Efficiency: Save over 70% on energy consumption as compared to fluorescent tubes.

Longer Lasting: LED tube lights have a very long life span, which can last more than 50,000 hours, about 15 times longer than their fluorescent counterparts, greatly reducing the cost of light source replacement and maintenance.

Easy Installation & free maintenance: LED tube lights are easy installations. No need for frequent maintenance or replacement compared with traditional fluorescent tubes.

LED Tube Light Applications

FAQs About LED Tube Lights

Can I replace a fluorescent fixture with an LED tube?

Yes, you can replace fluorescent tubes with LED tubes or LED-integrated fixtures. If you just want to replace the bulbs, you can use plug-and-play, direct-wire, or hybrid LED tubes.

Do T8 LED tubes need a ballast?

Most T8 LED tubes do not need a ballast. The only type of LED tube that requires a ballast is plug-and-play(type A or also known as ballast compatible LED tube). This type of LED tube is designed to operate with the existing fluorescent ballast.

Can a T8 LED replace a T12?

Yes, a T8 tube can replace a T12 tube of the same length and wattage as they have the same pins(G13 base).

Are LED tubes more efficient than fluorescent?

Yes, LED tube lights use substantially less energy than fluorescent tubes. LED tubes also have a longer lifespan, saving additional money in maintenance and replacement costs.
